Feb. 18, 2018 PRINCETON, N.J.- The Villanova Water Polo (0-5-0) team fell to both Princeton (3-4-0) and Harvard (5-3-0) on Sunday at the annual Princeton Invite first falling to Princeton 13-3 and then to Harvard 18-12. The Wildcats will return to play in California on March 2 to compete in the Claremont Convergence in which they will play four teams.
Princeton vs. Villanova
In the first quarter, Princeton jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before junior Kate Stenmoen scored the first goal to cut the Tigers lead to just two. Princeton would add one more goal to conclude the quarter making the score 4-1.
The second quarter was a pretty slow offense game for both teams in which the first goal of the second quarter didn't even occur until the final three minutes of the quarter when Villanova's senior driver Katy Gauvin scored a goal to make the score 4-2. But with :34 left in the quarter Princeton would answer back with a goal by Chelsea Johnson to make the halftime score 5-2.
The third quarter is when Princeton would break away after they went on a 4-0 run for the quarter in which all four goals were scored by four individual players which made the lead at the end of the quarter 9-2.
In the fourth quarter Villanova would be able to score one more goal courtesy of junior driver Maria Breen but not before Princeton scored three goals to make the score 12-3. The Tigers would add one more before the game ended making the final score 13-3.
Harvard vs. Villanova
Villanova struck first in opening quarter with a goal by senior driver Lizzie Louwers to put the Wildcats ahead 1-0. The Harvard went on a 4-0 run in the quarter to give the Crimson a 4-1 lead. Villanova would tighten that lead with a pair of goals scored by senior center Dominique Clark to cut the lead to one. Harvard would add one more goal before the quarter closed making the score 5-3.
In the second the Crimson went on a 5-0 run to begin the quarter increasing their lead to 10-3. Another goal by Clark though brought the Wildcats a little closer to make the score 10-4. Villanova would soon answer with another goal scored by freshman utility Charlotte Curran to cut the Harvard lead to five. Then Clark again would add to her strong day by scoring her fourth goal of the day to make the score at the half 11-6.
The third quarter began with another goal by Dominique Clark to make the score 11-7 with six minutes remaining. Harvard would respond back with a goal shortly after though to make the score 12-7. Due to strong defense, there would only be one more goal scored in the quarter by Villanova's junior driver Katie French to close the quarter with Harvard up 12-8.
After some back and fourth goals by each team to begin the quarter, senior Dominique Clark would another goal to her day to make the score 14-11. She would score one more on the day ending her day with an amazing seven goals total. Clarks last goal though was not enough as Harvard scored four goals in the remaining five minutes to end up with the victory 18-12.
Villanova falls to (0-5-0) on the season and Harvard improves to (5-3-0) on the season. Villanova will next travel to California to compete in the Claremont Convergence on March 2 where they will first face host Claremont-Mudd Scripps at 4:40 p.m.
