POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — The Villanova water polo team lost 12-11 to No. 22 Wagner Saturday in the MAAC semifinals at McCann Arena in Poughkeepsie, New York.
The 'Cats (20-9, 7–1 MAAC) came in as the two-seed and were neck-and-neck with the Seahawks (13-12, 6-2) throughout the contest, similarly to the pair's first matchup.
Layla Canales led VU offensively, scoring four goals.
Sara Withers and
Ella Mattocks both scored two each.
Anna Painter,
Coco Jones and
Riley Hull rounded out the scoring, all netting one.
Withers assisted four, followed by Painter and Hull with two.
Canales picked up three steals, Painter and Mattocks stole two and Jones, Withers, Hull and
Tessa Pettit stole one each.
Hull led the team with seven exclusions drawn, followed closely by Mattocks with six.
Tippy Maguire, Canales, Jones, Painter and
Emmie Mallory drew one each.
Both teams were even after the first quarter, with the period coming to a 2-2 conclusion.
Wagner took a 6-4 lead into halftime after outscoring the 'Cats 4-2.
Villanova came back in the third quarter, scoring four to the Seahawks' two to tie the contest at 8.
The final quarter saw Wagner score four goals, with VU chasing a majority of the period. The 'Cats scored three and had the final possession of the game, but fell just short, taking the 12-11 loss.
For six Wildcats, it was their final time donning the blue and white. Mattocks, Withers, Painter, Jones,
Isabel Foley and
Gracin Kerry all ended their careers with the loss Saturday.
Mattocks closes her career as one of the most prolific centers in program history, scoring 80 goals and drawing 71 exclusions in her final season on the Main Line, both second on the team.
Withers closes her career as VU's all-time assist leader, while scoring 25 goals in her final campaign.
Painter scored 33 goals in her final campaign and assisted 36.
Jones finished the season with 12 goals, 15 steals and 14 field blocks.
Foley leaves the 'Cats on a six goal, 25 assist and 24 steal season.
Kerry saved five in 12 attempts Saturday, bringing her season total to 177 saves.
Villanova closed the season with 20 wins for the third consecutive season, each under head coach
Michael Gordon.
