Wildcats fall to Clemson 3-1 in Sugar Bowl Tournament

Wildcats return to action tonight at 8 p.m. against Tulane

NEW ORLEANS – The Villanova women's volleyball team was defeated 3-1 by the Clemson Tigers in the opening game of the AllState Sugar Bowl Collegiate Volleyball Classic.

Head coach Josh Steinbach on the match, "We are pretty disappointed. We had lots of chances and couldn't close out sets. We'll have to be better in close game situations than we were today."

Junior setter Emma Decker had a double-double for the second consecutive game. She had 47 assists and 11 digs. It was Decker's fifth double-double this season.

Sophomore outside hitter Mallory Potts led the Wildcats with a season-high of 18 kills. Junior libero Regan Lough was the team leader in digs with 15.

The other two Wildcats with double digit kills were junior middle blocker Allie Olsonoski with 12 and senior middle blocker Amanda Pedersen-Henry with 10.

In the opening set, the match was tied 8-8 then the Tigers would go up two on the Wildcats. Villanova would tie the match at 19 and then won the next two points thanks to a kill by Allie Olsonoski and then a service ace by Emma Decker. Clemson would come back to tie the match at 24 and then the Tigers took three of the next four points to win the first set 27-25.

In the second set, Villanova was the first one to 10 leading Clemson 10-8. The Wildcats would then lead 17-10 and then 22-18 after a kill by Amanda Pedersen-Henry. With Villanova up 24-20, the Tigers went a 6-0 run to win the second set 26-24.

Villanova went on an 8-1 run to lead 10-3 in the third set. The Wildcats would go on another run to close out the set 25-20 to make the match 2-1 Clemson.

The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead again to start the set, leading 10-6. Villanova then extended their lead to 24-17 but Clemson went on an 8-1 run to tie the match at 25. The Wildcats and Tigers traded points back and forth, but the Tigers would go on to win the set 32-20 and the match. During the fourth set there were 11 ties and seven lead changes.

Villanova returns to action tonight at 8:00 p.m. against tournament host Tulane. Live stats and a live stream will be available for this match.
