Box Score PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Villanova Field Hockey traveled to Providence, R.I. where they faced off against Providence College. The Wildcats and the Friars competed in a back-and-forth battle that the Friars came out on top in with a 1–0 overtime win.
The first half was scoreless for both teams, but it was clear that Providence was the dominate figure. Villanova was only able to fire off one shot Providence on the other hand was able to get off five.
Erika Miller was able to help keep the Friars off the board with two big saves. The half was low in penalty corners; Nova earned one and Providence earned two but neither team was able to convert.
The second half was not a scene that showed much difference from the first half. The Friars were still hungry and fueled by their fiery first half.
Villanova was able to get off more shots in the second, but Providence still spent a majority of their time on the offensive end, putting the 'Cats defense to the test.
Although the Friars offense was in command for the entire game, the Wildcats defense was up to par. The battle continued right down to the 70
th minute of play and both teams remained scoreless.
The Wildcats ended the second half with three shots, two saves, and one penalty corner opportunity. The Friars got off six shots, recorded one save and had seven penalty corner opportunities.
Overtime was underway, and it did not take long for Providence to secure the game. In the 72
nd minute of play Izzy Mendez put back a deflection at the right post and gave the Friars the 1-0 victory. Allyson Parker was awarded the assist.
Providence College improved to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in BIG EAST play. Villanova falls to 4-6 and 1-2 in conference play.
The Wildcats return home on Monday, Oct. 1 when they host Lafayette College at 5 p.m.
