CAA Teleconference Week 2

On the victory at Temple…
As we are looking at the film, I don't want to sound like a broken record what Jim (Fleming) just said. A lot of positive things, obviously great to have our playmakers that got injured last year Zach Bednarczyk and (Matt) Gudzak and (Ryan) Bell and Rob Rolle back in our lineup. But there are definitely a lot of corrections too. Two turnovers at the end of the game really sealed it for us. We were able to run the ball and throw ball and you know when you can have a balanced attack that is always going to be helpful. Excited about the way our guys competed from start to finish and you know really excited to get the victory in the opening game.

On what type of momentum beating Temple gives the team to start the season…
Well it obviously starts off as a positive but again it is just one game and there is a lot of season left to play. We are obviously in the strongest FCS league in the country so something that the guys were real excited about right after and again what Jim (Fleming) just said on the call previously, we were happy in the locker room and all those things but now we have to focus on the next opponent and get ready for Lehigh. You know short-lived celebration and start moving in preparation.

On the type of energy in the locker room after beating a FBS opponent…
I think it just gives our guys the confidence and excitement to move forward. And I said this after the game when someone asked me the question, the guys that are our seniors and leaders who missed a good part last year, I think they came into the opening game of this season just a little hungrier to get back onto the field because part of their season was taken away from them last season. So it's a nice win, any win is a nice win. We are excited to move forward. We are excited as I mentioned the way our guys competed. When out there and didn't get rattled when we did get down there later in the game. We were able to comeback and still able to pull it out. So excited about the way our guys went for four quarters. It was a hot day and long day. So normally you always get concerned because the FBS guys are going to rotate a lot more players throughout the game then we are going to be able to do so it was good to see our guys seem to be in pretty good first game condition as well.

On defending Lehigh…
Yeah those guys I think were top five in both rushing and passing category a year ago and they have them back. They got experienced players back and looking at what they did this past weekend; they were also able to throw the ball and run the ball. Have that balanced attack that is all important so you know our defense is definitely up for the challenge. Lehigh put more points up against us a year ago more than anybody else we faced last season so just got to go in there and make sure we play good assignment football, cover the gaps and hopefully we can be successful in stopping the run and try to make them a little bit more one dimensional. Then we have to rely on our coverage obviously. I know our defensive guys will be up for the challenge. Our players will be excited to go out there and play.

On having Zach Bednarczyk back this season…
Yeah that makes all the difference in the world. Zach has always been pretty good with his accuracy before he got hurt last season I think his completion rate was about 70%. I think he was a little bit better than that this past weekend and the fact that he is athletic enough to do what you just said extend those plays. The second touchdown to Brandon Chadbourn he kind of had to do the same thing. Had to extend it a little bit and then find him in the end zone. Was able to throw a nice ball there as well. You know that last play that fourth and nine, that is just Zach and obviously Jarrett McClenton, two good guys that just made a play. You know they just made a great play, they were able to work together over the summer. Two experienced players just going out there and finding a way to get it done. The way Zach was able to extend that play was exciting to see and Jarrett made the big catch and was obviously able to get into the end zone. So that was awesome to see for those two guys.

On what it means to take down Temple on the first game of the season…
Well you know it's a good game because it is a rival game in a way that we are both local teams. Obviously it's a great game for the Philadelphia area so we are excited to go in there and come out victorious. But we will move on it's not the fact that we took down Temple. It's the fact that we got an opening day win and start off in a good way to get the season underway. I do like playing Temple because it is close and local. We will have a good crowd and they will have a good crowd so a lot of energy there. And obviously playing in the Eagles stadium that is kind of cool for our guys as well. As far as what it means for us to take down Temple, we look at it as just getting a good opening day win and getting the season started off in a good direction.

On using this momentum for the Lehigh game…
Well we have to go in there and I said to the guys after the game when you look at the film or when you come out of a game before you look at the film, you know sometimes its never as good or never as bad as you think it was.  So we got some correctable things to work on obviously. All the positive things, hopefully we can continue to do that consistently and go from there. We will definitely have our work cutout for us stopping an explosive offense like Lehigh and hopefully we will be able to move the ball and fix our kicking game a little bit because obviously we left a few points on the field this past weekend.

On challenges of playing Lehigh…
Well they have a great balanced attack, offensively as we mentioned previously. They have Brad Mayes back an experienced quarterback and they got (Dominick) Bragalone back who is a real explosive and strong runner. So you know you have to see if you can make them one-dimensional. Hopefully our key is to always stop the run and then obviously we have to defend the pass. If we can create some turnovers, we got those two interceptions late against Temple which kind of sealed the game for us so if we can win the turnover battle that is huge. That is always huge no matter who you are playing. And then on the other side they'll bring some pressure, they do some things defensively where they'll bring some blitzes or move their line around a lot. They are going to do some things to try and stop our run game as well. So we just have got to go out there and hopefully control the football like we did this past weekend and hope to put a few more points on the board.

On having key players back helps Aaron Forbes
Well it definitely is key, Aaron did a great job in the offseason. He dropped a little bit of weight but he is just as strong and probably a little faster than he was a year ago. He was elected captain so that gives you a little bit of what our team thinks about him going into his fourth year. He did not redshirt so he is a four-year guy as a senior. But he is explosive, strong and real strong in the weight room and that carries over to the field. He was able to carry the load for us but also having (Matt) Gudzak back and then (Justin) Covington takes some reps and give him some rests is also helpful as well. And obviously Zach (Bednarczyk) and Aaron (Forbes) and all the guys will be the first ones to tell you it all starts up front. And the guys up front did a nice job controlling the line of scrimmage and giving Zach time to get the ball to those targets you just mentioned and also opening up some holes for Aaron. I'm excited that Aaron was able to come out and start in a good way this season.

On the defense's play against Temple…
Yeah defense and again as I mentioned previously our philosophy is we are going to stop the run and go from there. We have some young guys in the secondary right now. We played Jaquan Amos as our starting corner, now he played a lot last year because of an injury we had in the secondary. But then we also played Christian Benford as a true freshman and Elijah Trent who got that last pick who is a true freshman and they went in there and made some really quality plays for us. Up front the only guy we really lost from a year ago was Ed Shockley so our linebacker core is pretty solid and with all the experience all of our young guys got as freshman last year we got a little added depth there so we are able to rotate some guys in there a little bit. And not have the guys like Jeff Steeb and Drew Wiley on the field all the time. And then our defensive line is fairly in tact from a year ago so we will rotate those guys through. Real great effort by our defense and to grab those two turnovers at the end really sealed the deal for us. You know whenever you can win the turnover battle I think you have a chance. So that is always going to be the goal going into each game.
