Villanova/Lehigh Post-Game Quotes

Villanova head coach Mark Ferrante…

Opening statement: We are obviously excited about a victory to get our record to 2-0.  I thought defensively we played really consistently throughout the game and gave ourselves some nice short fields and things like that.  We definitely have some things to clean up in the kicking game.  That was a little obvious unfortunately.  Offensively we just kind of got behind the sticks and shot ourselves in the foot a few too many times and had too negative yards plays.  Hopefully we can clean all that stuff up and get a little more consistent play in all three phases.  If we put all three phases together I think we can be pretty good moving forward, so that will be our focus getting into practice this week.

On the Wildcats defense: Our focus, and I've said this before, is we're going to stop the run.  Then obviously they lost their top ball carrier, so that's going to play into that a little bit with [Dominick Bragalone] going down.  I'm not sure what his injury was, but I know he was out of the game.  What has helped is, a year ago with all the injuries we had, we now have more depth on defense.  We're able to rotate guys through a little more, and doing that we're fresher when they're out there.  I'm real proud of how our defense played.  They knocked a lot of balls down.  I would have liked to see one or two more interceptions.  We only got the one turnovers but that will come with more consistent play.  The way they played today, we're real aggressive and we play really hard so if they keep doing that we'll make some nice plays."

On Zach Bednarczyk and the three first half touchdowns: I've said all along that Zach is one of our most consistent players, and that showed again today.

On the team's offense on third down, and making big plays: We did make some big plays.  Last week we had a few more third downs that were more makeable.  We got behind the sticks a little bit today, but the one [Zach made] for a touchdown, that was a long yardage play.  Last week Jarrett scored the winning touchdown against Temple and I'll say the same thing today.  It's just two really good players who have played together for a while and are making plays, and obviously to get in the end zone is a huge play.

Senior quarterback Zach Bednarczyk…

On the three first half touchdowns: I think we just started a little slow.  The penalties were killing us today.  We were able to overcome some of those penalties, but it's hard to score when you put yourself in second and long, third and long situations.  The guys up front did pretty well for me and Jarrett made a couple of great plays that helped me get in my groove.

On the difference between last year's game against Lehigh and this one: I think that our game last year was pretty similar to how we played this year.  A little sloppy, but got the job done.  This year they weren't able to put up as many points, so not that it made us complacent, but the defense allowed us to have a little more cushion.  Similar game to last year, pretty sloppy, but I think we had 38 points last year and 31 this year so a similar game.

Senior wide receiver Jarrett McClenton…

On his 62-yard touchdown reception: I just saw that on that type of play I'm the one main target and Zach is looking for me.  It just comes from preparation all summer, us practicing, route running and then getting our timing down for everything.

On Zach Bednarczyk: He's really good.  I think he's the best quarterback in CAA Football, maybe even the country, so it's just great having him back.
