The USBWA (United States Basketball Writers Association) today announced that Villanova Assistant Athletic Director for Communications,
Mike Sheridan, has been named the winner of the Katha Quinn Award, which is given annually in recognition for the recipient's work in serving the media.
The award is named after Quinn, who as the sports information director at St. John's University was recognized for supervising the basketball venue during the 1987 Pan American Games at Market Square Arena in Indianapolis. Earlier that year, she was diagnosed with liver cancer, but she refused to allow her condition to affect her commitment. Quinn continued her work at St. John's until less than a month before her passing in March 1989, one day before her birthday, at the age of 35.
"I know this award wouldn't be possible without the success of Villanova and also the way Jay is with the media," Sheridan said. "To have a front row seat to two national championships, and to interact with some of the student-athletes and everyone else who was a part of that, it's just been an incredible experience. I knew when I came here that I was going into a good situation, and that has never changed."
Sheridan joined the Villanova Athletic Department in October of 1998 and became the media contact for men's basketball. He has held this role ever since and in the summer of 2018 was promoted to the role of Assistant Athletic Director/Communications after previous serving as the department's Director of Media Relations.
"Mike has been an invaluable member of our team at Villanova both inside and outside of the sport of basketball and there is no one more deserving of this honor," said Villanova Director of Athletics
Mark Jackson. "He has a wonderful reputation, both locally and nationally, for his professionalism but more importantly for the kind of person he is. I couldn't be happier for him."
In addition, Sheridan also serves as the coordinating producer of the Emmy nominated "Inside Villanova Basketball with
Jay Wright" television program, while also serving as co-host and producer of "Talking Villanova Basketball with
Jay Wright." Sheridan is also the media relations contact for the Wildcats men's soccer program.
Sheridan is the co-author with
Jay Wright and Mark Dagostino of the New York Times bestseller, "Attitude: How to Develop a Winning Mindset On and Off the Court."
Prior to his arrival at Villanova, Sheridan spent 14 years as the managing editor of
Basketball Times and a decade as editor of
Eastern Basketball Magazine. The 1984 graduate of Fordham University earned two "Best Writing" awards from the United States Basketball Writers Association.
