VILLANOVA NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP TEAM TO CELEBRATE 10-YEAR ANNIVERSARY

- The Team Will Be Honored On Nov. 9 -

VILLANOVA, PA. – The 2009 Villanova football team will be honored on the 10th year anniversary of the team's national title during the Wildcats Nov. 9th game versus Richmond.

All players and coaches will be brought on to the field at halftime and introduced to the crowd. Game time at Villanova Stadium is set for 1 p.m.

During the 2009 season, Villanova went 10-1 in the regular season and earned the No. 2 overall seed in the FCS playoff bracket. The Wildcats went on to earn three straight home playoff wins over Holy Cross, New Hampshire and William & Mary to advance to the national title game versus Montana.

On the magical night of Dec. 18, 2009, Villanova earned the program's first-ever national championship with a thrilling 23-21 victory over the No. 1 national seed University of Montana in front of 14,328 fans at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Junior Matt Szczur rushed for a career-high 159 yards and two touchdowns to go with 227 yards of total offense en route to being named the game's Most Outstanding Player. Junior quarterback Chris Whitney completed 10-of-13 for 142 yards and a touchdown and rushed 16 times for 102 yards. The linebacker duo of Marquis Kirkland and Terence Thomas led the Villanova defensive effort. Kirkland tallied nine tackles, two tackles for loss and a sack, while Thomas registered eight total stops, two tackles for loss and a sack.
