Villanova, Pa.- Three straight goals by the St. John's Red Storm lifted them over the Villanova Wildcats in overtime on Thursday afternoon 4-3.
The Wildcats got on the board early in the 9
th minute when
Sam Rosette headed a ball to the ground to the left of the goal and the ball fell right in front of
Brice McInroy. McInroy was able to drill a cross to the opposite side of the net to push Villanova up 1-0. The Red Storm answered back in the 14
th minute on a successful penalty kick by Zsani Kajan to tie the game. The game remained 1-1 at halftime.
Villanova scored quick again in the second half when
Chloe O'Neill was able to dribble down the right line of the box and break away from her defender and get a shot off in the 48
th minute. The Wildcats pushed ahead 3-1 in the 58
th minute when Reegan Smith played a ball into the box off the end line. There was McInroy who was able to get a touch to get the ball into the back of the goal.
The Red Storm's Kajan scored a goal in the 62
nd minute to make it a one score game on a pass from Kayla Mesaros. St. John's tied the game in the 73
rd minute off a scramble in the box following a corner. Alex Madden kicked the ball in and Michelle Money got a shot off that was saved by
Rebecca Gartner and deflected back into play and to Samantha Masur. Masur was able to drill a shot into the goal to make it 3-3.
Neither team was able to score in the final minutes of regulation and forced overtime. It was just 25 seconds into overtime when Kajan picked a pass off from a Wildcat defender and took a shot from 18 yards out. The shot found the top corner of the goal and made the final 4-3.
The Wildcats will now travel to Rhode Island to take on the Providence Friars. Kick off on Sunday is scheduled for 1:00 P.M. and can be seen on BEDN.
