Wildcats Host Delaware Saturday Afternoon in Latest “Battle of the Blue” Contest

Villanova has played Delaware more times than any other opponent in its history

VILLANOVA, Pa.—In the 14th edition of the "Battle of the Blue" series, No. 10 Villanova (8-3, 4-3 CAA Football) hosts Delaware (5-6, 3-4 CAA) on Saturday afternoon.  Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Villanova Stadium in what will be the regular season finale for both teams.  It will also be Senior Day on Saturday and the Wildcats will honor their graduating seniors in a ceremony on the field prior to kickoff.  Villanova's senior class includes 22 student-athletes and two managers.

There is no opponent the Wildcats have played more times in their history than Delaware, with Saturday's contest the 52nd overall in the all-time series.  Villanova leads the series by a 30-21-1 margin and has captured 12 of the last 13 meetings since the annual rivalry game added the "Battle of the Blue" billing.

Saturday's game will be broadcast by FloFootball and can be seen by downloading the FloSports app on iOS, Roku or Apple TV 4.  Special pricing is available for CAA Football customers by visiting http://flosports.tv/caa.  A subscription allows access to live and on-demand games plus additional exclusive content.  Nick Mantegna and Steve Pinone call the action on the FloFootball broadcast, while Ryan Fannon and Kevin Reilly are in the booth for the radio call on 610 ESPN.  Streaming audio of the radio broadcast can also be heard on TuneIn.

Villanova will be playing its third straight home game on Saturday afternoon and is 4-1 at home on the year.  With their 35-7 victory over LIU last week in a rare Friday night contest, the Wildcats reached eight wins for the 15th time in their FCS era (since 1985).  After being predicted to finish ninth in the preseason CAA Football poll, Villanova is currently tied for third in the league and is one of just two conference teams with at least eight wins overall on the year.

Villanova had its best defensive game of the season last week from the standpoint of points allowed and total yards allowed.  In a 35-7 victory, the Wildcats gave up just 183 total yards to LIU and held the Sharks to a lone touchdown in the second quarter.  It marked the seventh time in the Mark Ferrante era and the first time this season that Villanova held an opponent to fewer than 10 points.  The Wildcats have won their past 62 games while giving up fewer than 10 points in a game, with the last loss a rare 3-0 defeat at the hands of Massachusetts on November 10, 1990.

Junior linebacker Forrest Rhyne (Waynesboro, Pa.) enters play versus Delaware needing just one tackle to reach 100 total stops on the season.  He is currently tied for third in the CAA stats with 99 tackles, including 47 solo tackles and 52 assisted stops.  Villanova began to keep tackle statistics in 1976 and since then there have been 46 instances of a player recording at least 100 tackles in a season.  The last to achieve the feat was Ed Shockley with 101 total stops in 2017.

On the offensive end, junior quarterback Daniel Smith (Leesburg, Va.) had a hand in all five of Villanova's touchdowns in last week's win over LIU.  Smith played the first half and the first offensive series of the third quarter and completed 15-of-22 passes for 201 yards and four touchdowns in addition to having a five-yard run for a score.  In the latest FCS national statistics, Smith ranks second in the country and leads CAA Football with 222 points he is responsible for.  His also second in the CAA and ninth nationally with 26 passing touchdowns.  Smith already ranks 10th in school history for a single-season with 2,613 passing yards.  He needs just 36 more yards to tie Clint Park (1996) for ninth in the Villanova record book with 2,649 yards.
