Wildcats lose Series Finale at Virginia 10-2

Bruno and Lorusso homered for the Wildcats

Box Score CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Villanova baseball team fell at Virginia 10-2 in the series finale on Sunday afternoon at Disharoon Park. The Wildcats drop to 0-6 while the Cavaliers improve to 4-3. Both runs for Villanova were scored by solo home runs. It was the first time this season the Wildcats have hit multiple home runs in a game. 

Gordon Graceffo got the start for the Wildcats. He pitched five innings, giving up five hits and two runs.

Villanova got on the board with their lead off batter Tyler Bruno. On the fifth pitch of the game, he hit a solo home run to right field to give the Wildcats the 1-0 lead. It was Bruno's first home run of the season.

In the bottom of the fourth, Virginia hit a leadoff double to right field. Two batters later the Cavaliers hit another double scoring the runner from second to tie the ball game at 1-1. The Wildcats got out of the inning with 4-6-3 double play. 

Villanova retook the lead in the top of the sixth with another solo home run by Nick Lorusso to left center field to make it 2-1. It was his first home run of the 2019 season. Lorusso ended the game with two hits which is his second multi-hit game of the year. 

The bottom of the sixth, the Cavaliers started the inning with a leadoff walk. The next batter reached on a fielding error which put runners on second and third with no outs. A ground out second base and then a sacrifice fly to left field made it 3-2 Virginia. The Cavaliers hit a single and the runner stole second. Virginia hit three singles in a row to make it 6-2.

The Wildcats couldn't get anything going in the top of the seventh. Virginia scored two runs in the bottom half of the inning to increase their lead to 8-2. The Cavaliers offense continued to produce in the bottom of the eighth as they scored two more runs to lead 10-2. Virginia would go on to win the game 10-2

Next up the Wildcats will travel down to Florida for the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Port Charlotte, Florida. Villanova's first game in the Sunshine State will be on March 1st against Chicago State with first pitch at 2:00 p.m.
