Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. – Villanova baseball secured a series victory with a commanding 9-3 win over Georgetown in game two on Saturday, May 2.
After a scoreless first inning, the Wildcats struck first in the second. Freshman
Larry Hotaling reached third following a one-out single, and
Aidan Barry brought him home on a Georgetown error to open the scoring. Villanova capitalized on the miscue, as graduate student
Carter Richey followed with a triple to right-center field to plate another run and give the Wildcats an early 2-0 lead.
Georgetown answered in the bottom half of the inning. A two-out single kept the frame alive, and with runners on the corners, the Hoyas delivered an RBI double to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Villanova responded immediately in the third. Sophomore
JoJo Montgomery led off with a single before
Brayden Leonard launched the first pitch he saw over the fence for a two-run home run, extending the lead to 4-1. Later in the inning,
Mark Gialluisi added an RBI single to score
Collin Quintano, pushing the advantage to 5-1.
The Wildcats kept rolling in the fourth. After a Richey walk, freshman
Jack Roventini tripled on a two-strike count to drive in another run. Leonard added his third RBI of the day with a groundout, bringing home Roventini and stretching the lead to 7-1.
Both pitching staffs settled in over the next three innings, holding each side scoreless through the fifth, sixth, and seventh.
Georgetown chipped away in the eighth with an RBI double and a sacrifice fly, trimming the lead to 7-3. However, Villanova quickly answered in the ninth. The Wildcats loaded the bases with three consecutive walks, and Quintano delivered a two-run single to provide insurance and extend the lead to 9-3.
Carsten Finnvold closed out the game, recording the final outs to seal the victory and the series win for Villanova.
