Washington, Pa. – Villanova Water Polo split two games on Sunday. They fell to McKendree 14-13 and beat Penn State Behrend 26-3.
McKendree
Villanova dropped a close one to McKendree losing by just one goal.
Kate Stenmoen led the team with four goals and an assist on nine shots.
Charlotte Curran scored three, while
Paris Huffman and
Kaysie Stuba each scored two.
Amanda Rice and
Kate Murray also had a goal for the Cats.
The game was close from beginning to end, as no team led by more than two goals. The scoring did slow down in the second half as it was tied at 10 in the first half and just seven total goals were scored in the second half.
Rachel Jennings got the start for Villanova and finished the game with 14 goals against and six saves.
McKendree tied the game with 5:40 left in the game and then scored the go-ahead goal with 4:11 left. They then added an insurance goal with 1:46 left, however Curran scored with 1:14 left in the game to cut the lead to 14-13, but Villanova could not get another to tie the game.
Penn State Behrend
Villanova jumped all over Penn State Behrend from the beginning of the game until the end. The Cats went up 11-1 in the first quarter and did not look back.
The Wildcats had 11 different goal scorers in the game. Curran and
Emma Stein led the team with four goals each,
Maria Breen and Stuba had three, Sophia Soboria, Murray,
Malia Gacutan,
Isabel Herbst, and Rice all had two apiece, and Huffman and
Ailish Skinner also had a goal.
Kylee Giblin picked up an assist in the game as well.
Jennings started the game in net for the Wildcats and finished with four saves, two assists, and just one goal against.
Gaby Palmisano relieved Jennings at halftime and had five saves, three assists, and two goals against.
Villanova led 16-2 at halftime and scored nine straight goals in the third period to extend the lead to 25-2. They also totaled 24 total steals on the game.
The Wildcats finished 2-2 in the W&J Invitational with wins over Gannon and PSB. Both of their losses came in one goal games against Salem and McKendree.
The next time the Cats will be in action is next Friday in the Convergence Tournament. They will play in four games in the tournament, two on Friday and two on Saturday.
