PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa.—Freshman third baseman
Nick Lorusso (Monroe, Conn.) went 3-for-4 and junior first baseman
Ryan Toohers (Florham Park, N.J.) drove in two runs in a 14-3 loss to Navy (10-7) at the Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth on Wednesday afternoon. Villanova (3-13) had nine hits on the day and wrapped up a quick two-game series against the Midshipmen.
Toohers drove in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third inning, but Navy turned the tables with two outs in the top of the fourth when Christian Policelli hit a grand slam to left to put the Midshipmen ahead 4-1. Navy added three more runs in the fifth inning and two in the sixth, while both teams plated runs in each of their final two turns at the plate.
Freshman shortstop
Dylan McNary (Jefferson, Mass.) drove a ball to the center field fence for a one-out triple in the third inning, then wisely stayed at third when sophomore center fielder
Chris Rotondo (Redding, Conn.) beat out a ground ball to third for an infield hit. Toohers came up next and skied a 1-2 pitch to center to bring McNary home.
In the bottom of the eighth, sophomore left fielder
Jeff Manto (Bristol, Pa.) and McNary drew consecutive walks to lead off the inning and Toohers delivered a one-out RBI single to right-center for the Wildcats second run. Freshman catcher
Will Reiner (Madison, Conn.) manufactured a run in the bottom of the ninth when he hustled for a double on a soft fly ball that fell in to left-center field, took third on a wild pitch and then scored on an RBI groundout by sophomore right fielder
Sam Margulis (Pennington, N.J.).
There were two outs and nobody on in the top of the fourth inning before the Midshipmen put together a four-run rally. Christian Hodge and Jacob Williamson each singled and Zach Stevens walked to load the bases before Policelli homered on a 2-2 pitch. Hodge hit a three-run home run later in the game.
In addition to Lorusso and Toohers tallying multi-hit games, McNary was on base twice with his triple and a walk. Sophomore second baseman
Pat O'Neill (Eagleville, Pa.) also had a hit in the game as Villanova continues to put runners on base consistently. The team has posted a .374 on-base percentage through the season's first 16 games, with five players reaching base at an over .400 clip.
The two games against Navy in the past two days marked the first meetings between the teams since 2005, and the Wildcats first home games against the Midshipmen since 1962.
Villanova returns to action on Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. to host La Salle.
