Providence, R.I.- The Villanova Wildcats used an early offensive surge to hold on to defeat the Brown Bears on Monday afternoon by a final of 10-9.
In the opening quarter four different Wildcats netted goals to Browns one to jump out to a 4-1 lead.Â
Matt Campbell kept the goal scoring going in the second quarter to put Villanova up four. The Bears scored two before
Connor Kirst scored two quick goals to put the Wildcats up 7-3 at the 4:22 mark. Brown had one goal seconds before halftime to put Villanova up three.
Ryan Aughavin scored his second goal for Brown to start the third quarter before
Keegan Khan and
Eric Overbay scored to push the Wildcats up four midway through the quarter.Â
At the 11:33 mark in the fourth Khan set up Campbell for his second goal of the game to give the Wildcats their 10
th goal. The Bears closed out the game on a four-goal run, Aughavin and Jack Kniffin both completed a hat trick. Â
In the final seconds of the game the Bears launched the ball down the field and Carson Song got a shot of with just a second to go and
Will Vitton made the save to give Villanova their second win in 48 hours.
Vitton finished with 12 saves along with three ground balls.Â
TJ Comizio had his second straight game with seven ground balls and caused one turnover. Now Comizio is fourth all-time in career caused turnovers with 52.Â
This closed out non-conference play for Villanova and on Saturday the Wildcats will welcome Marquette for the BIG EAST opener. The game can be seen on Nova Nation All-Access and will also be Alumni Day.
