Liv Morgan Wins Heptathlon at UAlbany Spring Classic

Villanova had three of the top six finishers in the heptathlon at the meet

ALBANY, N.Y.—Freshman multi-event athlete Liv Morgan (Bronx, N.Y.) became the second-highest point scorer in school history in the heptathlon with a first place finish at the Bobbi Palma UAlbany Spring Classic on Friday afternoon.  Morgan scored 4,926 points over two days of competition to pace a field of 12 competitors.  Villanova had three of the top six finishers, as junior Sofia Calabrese (Edwards, Colo.) placed fifth with 4,195 points and senior Niki Cleary (Flemington, N.J.) seventh with 4,106 points.

Morgan's winning point total is the fifth-most in a heptathlon by a Wildcats athlete, trailing only four higher scores by school record holder Melanie Sklepko.  Along the way to finishing as the meet's winner, Morgan led the field of 12 athletes in four of the seven heptathlon disciplines and she recorded personal best marks in four of the events.  Morgan outscored the runner-up from Albany by more than 400 points.

Friday afternoon's competition began with Morgan already in the lead after scoring 2,959 points through the first four events a day earlier.  She picked up where she left off and finished first in the field with a long jump of 5.27 meters and a javelin throw of 39.93 meters.  Morgan closed out the competition with a time of 2:32.06 in the 800 meters, a mark which was third overall and trailed only her two teammates who crossed the finish line ahead of her.

Calabrese and Cleary each surpassed their previous career-high scores in the heptathlon, with Calabrese going over 4,000 points for the first time.  She held onto her fifth place standing from Thursday's events thanks in part to leading the competition with a time of 2:28.41 in the 800 meters.  Calabrese also had a long jump of 5.03 meters and a throw of 20.55 meters in the javelin.

After starting the day in seventh place with 2,416 points, Cleary moved up a spot to sixth in the final standings.  She recorded a score that was eight points higher than her previous highest of 4,098 at last year's BIG EAST Championships.  In Friday's action, Cleary had a long jump of 5.04 meters to go along with a javelin throw of 28.40 meters and a time of 2:31.54 in the 800 meters.

With the all-time Villanova performance list getting updated following the meet, Morgan ranks second in the Wildcats record book for the heptathlon.  Calabrese and Cleary rank sixth and seventh, respectively.
