Early Runs Prove Too Much for Villanova to Overcome

Five different Wildcats got a hit

NEWARK, Del. – The Villanova baseball team lost 5-3 to the Delaware Blue Hens on Saturday night at Bob Hannah Stadium. Five different Wildcats got a hit.

Gordon Graceffo got the start for Villanova and pitched three and a third innings, allowing seven hits, three runs while striking out two.

With one out in the bottom of the fourth, a power outage affected the stadium lights and caused an one-hour delay.

Jonathan Rosero came in after the delay and pitched four and two thirds innings, allowing two hits, two runs and struck out six.

The Blue Hens got on the board in the bottom of the second with a leadoff single and then a triple scored the first run. Then the Blue Hens singled through the right side to make it 2-0 Blue Hens.

Delaware had bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the third and the Blue Hens reached on a fielder's choice to score their third run of the game.

Villanova started the top of the eighth with a John Heilenbach walk and then a single by Ryan Toohers. With one out, Chris Rotondo walked to load the bases but the Blue Hens got the next two outs to end the inning.

Delaware hit a two run home run to left field to make it 5-0 after eight innings of play.

The Wildcats picked right up in the top of the ninth with a one out double to left field by Doug deMarrais. Sam Margulis singled up the middle and the Wildcats had runners on the corners. Heilenbach reached on a fielder's choice but score deMarrais. A single to left field by Dominic Sarro and then a Tyler Bruno single to center field loaded the bases again for Villanova with two outs.

Villanova couldn't bring home the runners and the Blue Hens won 5-3.

The Wildcats and Blue Hens will conclude the series tomorrow April 28th at 1:00 p.m.
