Box Score Denver, Colo.- The Villanova Wildcats fell to the Denver Pioneer's in the BIG EAST semifinals on Thursday night by a final of 17-11. Villanova closes out the season with an 8-7 overall mark and 3-2 in BIG EAST play.
Villanova got on the board with a goal by BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year
Connor Kirst at the 12:03 mark in the opening quarter. The Pioneers would score the final five goals of the quarters to push themselves up 5-1 after the first 15 minutes.
Denver continued the scoring run into the start of the second quarter netting the first goal but
Patrick Daly would put an end to it scoring an unassisted goal at the 11:07 mark. The Wildcats scored their third goal when
Keegan Khan dished a pass from behind the cage to Kirst at the top of the arch. Kirst ripped the shot at the 9:50 mark for his 100
th career point; Villanova trailed 7-3. The Pioneer's had five more goals before halftime to be up 12-3 heading into the locker room.
Villanova used halftime to regroup and reset their defense and limited the Pioneers to only five goals in the second half. The Wildcat offense locked in as well scoring back-to-back goals to get things started.
Eric Overbay netted an unassisted goal first and Kirst set up
Matt Campbell for the second goal. Denver scored two quick goals but
Chris Donovan had his second goal at Villanova with just seconds remaining before the end of the third to make the Denver lead 15-6.
The Wildcats fought back in the final quarter netting five goals to close the game. TJ Comzio set up Khan for the first and then Khan set up
Timmy Hardy for the second goal pushing the Wildcats within seven. DU would net two more and the Wildcats three to close out the game. Khan continued to have a hand in the scoring action, assisting a
Corey McManus goal at the 10:27 mark and then diving from behind the cage for one of his own a minute later. McManus would score the final goal of the game on a pass from Kirst to make the final 17-11.
Dan Fisher went 16-for-32 (.500) from the faceoff X in the semifinals along with a game high 10 ground balls.
TJ Comizio finished the season with 29 caused turnovers, giving him 61 in his four year career at Villanova. The is third most in program history and most by a shot stick defensive midfielder. Goalkeeper
Nick Testa wrapped up his career 10
th all-time in career saves with 282. During tonight's game Khan scored his 50
th goal and now has 94 career points.
