PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The Villanova baseball team won 4-3 at the Rutgers Scarlet Knight on Tuesday afternoon. The Wildcats have won three of the last four meetings against Rutgers.
Mike Schwartz got the start on the mound for the Wildcats. He pitched two innings, allowing two hits and two runs.
Jonathan Rosero relieved Schwartz and is the 20th pitcher all-time to surpass 200 innings pitched. Rosero pitched four innings, allowing two hits and struck out two.
Cameron Mathes pitched the final three innings for the Wildcats earning the save. It was second save of the season and Mathes allowed only two hits, one run and one walk.
Sam Margulis and Chris Rotondo led the Wildcats with two hits.
In the top of the second Dylan McNary led off with a home run over the left field wall to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. It was McNary's second home run of the season.
Rutgers quickly responded in the bottom of the second with runners on first and second with one out, Serruto doubled down the left field line scoring both runners and Rutgers led 2-1.
In the top of the seventh, the Wildcats had runners on first and second with one out. Tyler Bruno singled to right field scoring Sam Margulis to tie the game at 2-2. Up next was Chris Rotondo who singled to left center field scoring Bruno and Heilenbach and the Wildcats led 4-2.
The Scarlet Knights got one back in the bottom of the eighth after a two out single to right center field to make it 4-3 Villanova.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Scarlet Knights went down in order and Villanova won 4-3.
Villanova returns to action tomorrow afternoon at Army West Point. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
