Georgetown Set to Visit Wildcats Saturday

BIG EAST battle set for noon at Wells Fargo Center

VILLANOVA, Pa. – A four game homestand for Villanova begins Saturday afternoon when Georgetown (11-5 overall, 1-2 BIG EAST) comes to the Wells Fargo Center. Tipoff is set for noon in South Philadelphia.

The game can be seen nationally on FS1 with Brian Custer and Len Elmore stationed courtside. Ryan Fannon and Whitey Rigsby will have the radio call that can be found on 610 ESPN Radio in the Delaware Valley and the TuneIn app everywhere.

The No. 16/16 Wildcats (11-3 overall, 2-1 BIG EAST) rallied to down Creighton on Tuesday night, 64-59, behind 24 points from junior guard Collin Gillespie. Also making an important contribution was freshman forward Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, who finished with seven points and a season-high 14 rebounds.

In his first season in the Blue and White, Robinson-Earl stands fourth in the BIG EAST in rebounding at 9.6 caroms per contest. He also averages 10.4 points per game. But for head coach Jay Wright, those front porch numbers only tell a portion of the story when it comes to this 6-9 native of Overland Park, Kan.

"Jeremiah does all the little things for us," stated Jay Wright. "He's intelligent, guards the pick and roll. He can guard little guards. He guards bigs. He screens, he shoots. He just does it all. Jeremiah's a heck of a player. I'm happy to have him."

No play on Tuesday night may have been bigger than the offensive rebound Robinson-Earl collected off a missed shot by Jermaine Samuels with 19 seconds left and the Wildcats nursing a 60-57 lead. The extra possession ultimately led to a pair of Gillespie free throws that were later backed up by two more from Justin Moore.

While Villanova's defense has tightened of late – Wright called the effort against the Bluejays the team's best of 2019-20 – its offense has faced new challenges. Villanova was just 6-of-33 from beyond the arc Tuesday night (.182) and hasn't scored more than 68 points in its three BIG EAST games.

Saturday presents another tall task as the Hoyas make the drive up I-95 after posting a convincing 87-66 victory over St. John's on Wednesday night in Washington, D.C. Georgetown jumped out to a 20-7 lead and never looked back.

"I've said it every year that, top to bottom, this has always been the best conference in the country," Wright said Thursday. "When No. 1 plays No. 10 in this conference, it's a tough game. I don't think there's any conference like that.

"I thought we did a good job of having a short memory after not playing well at Marquette (Saturday). We learned a lot and our guys responded really well. We really played well defensively at Creighton. We're not close to where we want to be offensively yet but we feel good about our improvement from the Marquette game to the Creighton game."

The Wildcats will continue their run at home on Tuesday night, when DePaul makes its way to Finneran Pavilion. That game is set to begin after 8:30 p.m. and will air nationally on FS1 with the radio broadcast found on 610 ESPN Radio and the TuneIn app.

The 2019-20 season – Villanova's 100th college basketball campaign – is presented by Hartford Funds and Coca-Cola.
