NEW YORK—Sophomore jumper
Malik Cunningham (St. Andrew, Jamaica) was named the BIG EAST Men's Field Athlete of the Week in an announcement made by the conference office on Wednesday afternoon. It is the first career weekly honor for Cunningham, who was the top collegiate finisher in the triple jump at the Great Dane Classic last weekend.
Cunningham recorded a mark of 15.14 meters in Villanova's first meet of the season. The mark was his third result of 15 meters or better as a collegian and easily put him into the lead at the top of the BIG EAST performance list for the young indoor season. Cunningham came in second overall out of 11 competitors in the triple jump, trailing only a club track athlete.
As a freshman last season, Cunningham scored in both the high jump and the triple jump at the indoor BIG EAST Championships. He is the third current member of the Wildcats roster to be chosen as the conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week indoors, joining teammates
Thomas Conboy and
Jacob Kelly who each earned the honor last year.
Villanova will be back in action with its first full team meet of the season, the Wesley A. Brown Invitational at Navy which takes place on Saturday in Annapolis, Md.
