Anthony Brodie Named BIG EAST Men’s Track Athlete of the Week

Freshman sprinter recorded season-best times in the 200 meters and 400 meters last weekend

NEW YORK—Freshman sprinter Anthony Brodie (Bronx, N.Y.) was named the BIG EAST Men's Track Athlete of the Week in an announcement made by the conference office on Thursday morning.  Brodie earns his first career weekly honor after tallying season-best times in both the 200 meters and the 400 meters at the Sykes & Sabock Challenge last weekend.

Villanova had a number of noteworthy performances in the meet at Penn State last Saturday, highlighted by Brodie moving into the BIG EAST lead in the 200 meters and rising to third on the conference performance list in the 400 meters for the year.  He was the runner-up in each of his races at the Sykes & Sabock meet while posting times of 21.73 in the 200 meters and 48.22 in the 400 meters.

Brodie also rose to sixth place on the Wildcats all-time indoor performance list in the 200 meters.  He is one of 10 athletes from Villanova all-time to break 22 seconds during indoor competition, and one of two to reach that milestone this season.  Brodie and junior teammate Richie Bush (21.87) have been the top two competitors in the BIG EAST in the 200 meters so far this season.

In his first season of collegiate competition, Brodie has been a key addition to the Wildcats roster and the team's sprint group.  He has competed in the 200 meters, the 400 meters and the 500 meters in three meets on the year and is expected to be among the top performers when Villanova competes at the BIG EAST Championships next month.

This is the third weekly honor of the season for the Wildcats men's track & field team.  Sophomore jumper Malik Cunningham has been named the Men's Field Athlete of the Week on two previous occasions.  The last Villanova freshman to win a BIG EAST weekly honor was Patrick Tiernan who was twice the Men's Track Athlete of the Week during the 2014 indoor season.
