Box Score 2 KISSIMMEE, Fla. — Villanova softball returned to ESPN's Wide World of Sports on Feb. 22 for two more games. The Wildcats took on Morgan State in the first game of the day before battling against Oakland in the second. However, just like the first day of the tournament, the results were mixed.
Paige Rauch got the start on the mound and responded with a 12 strikeouts and no runs in six innings. Anissa Amarillas came on to close out the game, recording two strikeouts.
Rauch hit a double in the second inning, bringing in Angela Giampolo to score. Chloe Smith hit a home run the very next at bat, adding two runs to Villanova's total. Sydney Hayes and Caroline Jones added home runs in the sixth inning to cap off the scoring for the day.
Against Oakland, there was no shortage of offense.
The Wildcats tallied nine runs in the first inning, thanks in part to four home runs. Giampolo scored on a Rauch single to center field. Smith picked up a two-run home run after that, giving her five homers on the year.
Jones added a two-run homer next, followed by Ryan Henry and a three-run shot from Rauch.
However, Oakland did not go away.
The Grizzlies answered with a nine-run inning of their own, tying the game after one inning. They would pull ahead in the second before adding runs in the fourth and fifth to go ahead 12-9.
Down but not out, the Wildcats went to work.
Hayes singled to left field, scoring Dani Dabroski, who was pinch running for Smith. Jones then recorded her third home run of the day and her fourth of the weekend to tie the game at 12.
Villanova had a chance to take the lead in the top of the seventh, but were unable to make a move. Oakland, however, was able to capitalize.
In the bottom of the seventh, facing an 0-2 count, the Grizzlies hit a two-run, walk-off home run to give themselves a 14-12 victory.
Villanova will face off against Troy on Feb. 22 at 12:30 PM.
