Box Score 2 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – On the final day of the River City Leadoff in Jacksonville, Villanova's softball team put on a show. Facing off against Nicholl's State in the morning followed immediately by Jacksonville, the Wildcats went 1-1. They handled Nicholl's State, 6-0, but fell to Jacksonville, 5-1.
Paige Rauch showed up big in the first game of the day, recording a pair of two-run home runs, bringing her season total to three. She also put together a strong performance on the mound, going five innings while allowing just two hits and no earned runs.
Gabby Wenn pitched the final two innings, striking out two batters and walking one, securing the first shutout of the season.
Chloe Smith and
Becky Ducar also scored during the game.
Megan Kern had three hits -- tying Rauch for the team lead -- while
Julia DaCosta had a team-high six put outs.
In the final game against Jacksonville, things took a little bit longer to develop.
Neither team was able to score early, thanks to some excellent pitching. It was not until the sixth inning that either team got on the board.
Kern got the RBI, bringing in
Dani Dabroski to get the Wildcats their lone run of the game. However, the lead was short lived as the Dolphins put up five runs in the bottom of the inning. Villanova had a chance to get back on top in the seventh, but could not put anything together.
The Wildcats close out the weekend with a 3-2 overall record. They will see action again on Feb. 14 when they travel to Orlando, Fla. to take on Penn State and Iowa State.
