Box Score 2 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A day after topping San Diego State in its first game of the River City Leadoff, Villanova's softball team was at it again on Feb. 8, once again taking on the Aztecs.
Unlike the previous result, the Wildcats fell, 8-4.
San Diego State got the early 3-0 lead, but Villanova was able to get one back when
Paige Rauch crossed home thanks to a
Megan Kern hit. In the third, Villanova pulled even as
Angela Giampolo and Rauch scored.
The Aztecs once again took the lead in the fourth but did the majority of their damage in the top of the seventh, registering four runs to go up 8-3.
Looking for the comeback, things started out hot. Rauch recorded her first home run of the season to make it a 8-4 game, but after that the offense sputtered.
However, in the second game of the day, the bats woke up. Taking on host Jacksonville, Villanova recorded a season-high 10 runs in a 10-2 victory.
Giampolo was the lone player to cross home in the first inning, but more runs were on the way.
Julia DaCosta,
Becky Ducar,
Victoria Sebastian, Giampolo and
Chloe Smith all scored in the second inning, guiding the Wildcats to a 6-0 lead.
That was extended in the third as DaCosta recorded a home run and Ducar, Sebastian and Giampolo all scored. Jacksonville picked up two runs in the fifth, but by then the game was under control.
Villanova will close out its trip tomorrow with a contest against Nicholls State at 10:00 a.m. before again taking on Jacksonville at 12:30 p.m.
