VILLANOVA, Pa.—In response to the global outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19), and in conjunction with
precautions announced earlier today by Villanova University, Villanova Athletics will implement several new precautionary measures beginning on Saturday, March 14. These protocols will remain in place until Tuesday, April 14, at which point the status will be reevaluated.
At this time, there have been no confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Villanova's campus. The following measures being taken are done so with an abundance of caution for the health and well-being of Villanova student-athletes and the greater campus community.
- All in-person classes meeting on campus will be suspended and classes will be taught solely online beginning on Monday, March 16. Students have the option to return home or remain on campus to complete their online instruction.
- Effective, Saturday, March 14, all on-campus athletic contests and competitions will be limited to only essential personnel and the following:
- Participating student-athletes
- Coaches
- Officials
- Other essential personnel as determined by Villanova Athletics
- Student-Athletes immediate family members
- Media
- All normal Athletic Department operations for in-season and out-of-season sports on campus will continue to operate. All Villanova home competitions and practices will occur as originally scheduled, with the exception of the softball home opener on Wednesday, March 11 which has been cancelled.
- Fitness centers will remain open. Intramural, club and recreation opportunities for all students will continue to operate as normal.
- Villanova teams will continue to follow nationally mandated travel regulations for any off-campus contests, which at this time allow for travel to road competitions as originally scheduled. Student-athletes, coaches and staff who do not feel comfortable traveling or participating in team activities will be accommodated.
- All external events associated with athletics on campus (i.e. Selection Sunday, awards banquets, large gatherings, etc.) are cancelled through Tuesday, April 14.
Villanova Athletics has remained in constant communication with University and NCAA leadership in monitoring the latest developments related to the coronavirus outbreak. Further guidance will continue to be provided by the University's emergency preparedness team that meets regularly to assess the coronavirus situation and its effect on the campus community, with recommendations from local and state health authorities and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
