VILLANOVA, Pa.—In response to the rapidly evolving situation around coronavirus (COVID-19) and with the health and safety of student-athletes, coaches, staff and the entire community in mind, Villanova Athletics announced on Thursday afternoon the cancellation of the remainder of winter and spring sport competitions and championships following announcements from the NCAA and the BIG EAST.
NCAA Statement:
Today, NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors cancelled the Division I men's and women's 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA championships. This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities.
BIG EAST Statement:
The BIG EAST Conference has announced the cancellation of all 2020 BIG EAST springs sports competitions, effective immediately. This decision follows today's NCAA announcement to cancel all winter and spring championships.
