CAA Football Votes to Suspend Conference Competition in 2020

Villanova will continue to examine all scenarios related to the 2020 football schedule

RICHMOND, Va.—CAA Football announced today that the Conference's Board of Directors has voted to suspend conference competition in the Fall of 2020 due to continuing concerns associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. For the 2020-21 academic year, conference institutions will have the ability to manage practice activities for its football student-athletes in a manner that best meets institutional, federal, state and local guidelines, as well as NCAA rules.
 
In expressing an understanding of the uniqueness of the Conference's composition, the geographical expansion of the Conference membership and the complexity of an ever-changing situation, the CAA Board of Directors also affirmed that the Conference's policies would permit member institutions the ability to explore the option of pursuing playing an independent football schedule in the Fall of 2020. The league additionally expressed a commitment to examining the possibility of conducting a football season in the Spring of 2021.
 
The current situation regarding a return to athletic competition on college campuses remains fluid and multiple options for a football competition schedule during the 2020-21 academic year are still being studied. Villanova Athletics will consider all possible scenarios for its football season and is continuing to review opportunities for all of its student-athletes to train and condition with their coaches and receive athletic instruction upon returning to campus.
 
Villanova's path forward is being driven by the most up-to-date guidance from campus leadership and public health authorities to maintain the health and safety of student-athletes, athletics staff and the community.
