Villanova, Pa.- The Villanova Wildcats fell to the Providence Friars in the second overtime period on Thursday, by a score of 1-0. Villanova sits at 6-7 overall and 0-5 in conference play this season, while Providence improves to 7-3-2 on the season, 2-1-1 in BIG EAST play.
The Friars were able to score the golden goal in the 107th minute after working the ball across the top of the box. Amber Birchwell was able to cross the ball to Meg Hughes, who found herself a shot opportunity to win the contest for Providence.Â
In goal for Villanova,
Megan McClay was a key in their clean sheet through the first 100 minutes. She turned away five shots in the match,all of which came in regulation. The Friars were able to out shoot the 'Cats 19-5. McClay played the entirety of the match, totaling 106:41.Â
Susanna Soderman was able to get off a quality chance in the 47th minute, that was saved by the Providence goalkeeper. Minutes later,
Francesca Yanchuk got off a shot inside the box that was also saved by the goalkeeper.Â
The Wildcats will conclude the weekend homestand on Sunday, hosting BIG EAST opponent Creighton. The match is scheduled for a 1 PM kickoff at Higgins Soccer Complex
