Providence Defeats Wildcats 4-0

Friars scored twice in each half

Box Score             Providence picked up a 4-0 victory over Villanova Sunday afternoon in a game played at Chapey Field in Rhode Island.
 
            Providence (5-1 overall, 3-1 BIG EAST) moved in front at 19:28 off a sequence that began with a Friars' corner kick. The Friars moved the ball inside the 18 yard box where Hannah McNulty struck a volley into the right side of the net.
 
            The Friars picked up a second goal in the 34th minute off a run down the left side that began with a feed from Kyla Gallagher. She found Grace Murphy who served the ball from out wide into the 18 yard box, where Samantha Adams collected the ball and sent the shot into the net at 33:53.
 
            A few moments late Villanova goalkeeper Megan McClay made a fine save, her third of the opening period. Later, the Wildcats (1-6-1 overall, 0-3-1 BIG EAST) earned a free kick 24 yards from goal but Emma Weaver's shot went wide.
 
            Freshman Maria Thomas took over the goalkeeping duties for the Wildcats in the second half.
 
            The Friars picked up a third goal at 69:53. Elayna Grillakis was credited with the goal off a feed from Anna Kalooski. With Villanova pressing forward later in the period, Providence added an 82nd minute goal from Meg Hughes to extend their lead to 4-0.
 
            Villanova returns to the Higgins Soccer Complex on Thursday to host BIG EAST rival Seton Hall.
