VILLANOVA, Pa.—A strong game from start to finish saw Villanova (4-2) get contributions from nearly every player on the roster as it defeated Mount St. Mary's (0-6) by a final score of 16-4 at the Villanova Swim Complex on Sunday evening. The outcome made for another successful weekend for the Wildcats, who won two games out of three for the second straight weekend as they wrapped up their second home tournament of the season. This is the fourth time in the program's varsity history and the first year since 2017 that Villanova has won at least four of its first six games to begin a season.
Junior utility
Kaysie Stuba (La Grange, Ill.) scored a team-high four goals in the win over The Mount, but the real story of the match was the balanced offensive production throughout the team's lineup. Stuba was one of 10 players who scored at least one goal in the victory, and the Wildcats jumped out to leads of 4-2 after the first quarter and 6-3 by halftime before putting the game well out of reach with a big third quarter burst.
Villanova pulled away from the halftime margin with six unanswered goals after the break and led 12-3 going into the final period. Freshman attacker
Kimora Farry (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) had the best outing of her young collegiate career with three goals, one assist and three steals. Freshman attacker
Sydney Bianchi (Menlo Park, Calif.) also had a multi-goal performance with two scores and one exclusion drawn.
A young Wildcats squad which features 14 freshmen and sophomores among the 17 members of the roster is playing better together as the team gets more in-game experience. The consistency of the Villanova offense has not lagged in the early going of the 2021 campaign, as the Wildcats are averaging 13.7 goals per game and have reached double digits in the scoring column five times in six outings.
Sophomore attacker
Allie Hansen (Friendswood, Texas) scored a power play goal, had one assist and drew three exclusions in the Mount St. Mary's win, while sophomore utility
Emily Morrissey (Ambler, Pa.) and junior center defender
Amanda Rice (San Jose, Calif.) each had one goal, one assist and two steals. The other goal scorers for Villanova were sophomores
Lauren Picard (Darien, Conn.) and
Joia McKinney (Chicago, Ill.) as well as freshmen
Stella Byles (Portland, Ore.) and
Hanna Cloeter (Long Grove, Ill.).
On the defensive end, the Wildcats recorded a season-high nine steals and freshman
Abigail Shelby (Bellaire, Texas) made nine saves in goal.
Villanova has an exhibition match at La Salle next weekend and will be preparing for the start of conference play later in the month. The first MAAC game of the season is on Saturday, March 27 when the Wildcats travel to VMI for a 2 p.m. contest. The teams met in a scrimmage at Villanova last weekend before the Wildcats played their season opener against Saint Francis later the same day.
