Women's Basketball to Take on UMass in First Round of WNIT

Villanova is scheduled to travel to Charlotte, N.C., this weekend to play in the Charlotte Region of the 2021 WNIT. The Wildcats will face the Massachusetts Minutewomen in the first round of the 32-team tournament on Friday, March 19, at 8 p.m. Villanova enters play with a 15-6 overall record, while UMass is 14-7 on the season. All the games in the Charlotte Region will be played at the Bojangles Coliseum and they can be seen live on the FloSports app.
 
With a win over UMass, the Wildcats will take on the winner of the Florida/Charlotte game on Saturday, March 20 at 8 p.m. Villanova would play the loser of the Florida/Charlotte contest with a loss to UMass in round one at 2 p.m.
 
In the history of Villanova women's basketball, the Wildcats are 33-27 in postseason play. This record includes the NCAA Tournament (8-11), EAIAW Tournament (6-4), WNIT (16-11) and the AIAW Tournament (3-1).
 
The Wildcats are making their 12th appearance in the WNIT in 2021 and their 18th postseason berth in the last 21 seasons. The 18 appearances include six NCAA bids and 12 WNIT trips. Villanova currently owns a 16-11 all-time mark in the WNIT.
 
Entering play in the WNIT, sophomore Maddy Siegrist has 488 career rebounds and is 12 shy of 500. If she gets to 500, she will become just the third player in school history to record 500 rebounds in two seasons. Shelly Pennefather (1983-87) and Lisa Angelotti (1984-88) also accomplished the feat in their first two years. 
 
After 21 contests in 2020-21, Villanova has been credited with an assist on 409 of their 553 made field goals for 73.9 percent.  Senior Raven James leads in the assist category with 72, followed by Brianna Herlihy with 71.
 
Villanova is led in scoring and rebounding by Siegrist who is averaging 22.6 ppg. and 10.0 rpg. Two other Wildcats are averaging double figures, including Herlihy at 14.1 ppg., and senior Sarah Mortensen who is scoring 11.5 ppg.
