Timely Offense Leads Villanova Past Stony Brook 8-3

PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – On a gorgeous Sunday afternoon, Jimmy Kingsbury (Phoenixville, Pa.) battled through six innings to lead Villanova (6-2) to a weekend sweep over Stony Brook (4-7). Kingsbury picked up his third consecutive win on the young season while limiting the Seawolves to just five hits and two runs.

Following a clean top of the first inning, the Wildcats manufactured an early run to put pressure on the Seawolves. Chris Rotondo (Redding, Conn.) led off the inning and launched a deep fly ball to center field that carried to the wall resulting in a triple. Rookie Cameron Hassert (Longmont, Colo.) stepped into the box next and battled in a two-strike count and grounded out to first plating Rotondo for the early lead.

Stony Brook regained the lead in the top of the third plating two runs following a series of hits and smart baserunning. Kingsbury settled in and the senior struck out the remaining two Seawolves stranding the bases loaded and minimized the damage.

The Wildcats did not allow that lead to last long as they worked themselves into hitters counts and capitalized on scoring opportunities. AJ Hansen (Collegeville, Pa.) smoked a one-out triple into right center and Chris Rotondo notched an RBI single into centerfield to even the score. Rotondo worked his way around the bases by swiping second for a stolen base and tagging up to third on a deep fly ball. Jack O'Reilly (Villanova, Pa.) stepped into the box with two-outs and ripped a triple into the right center gap giving the Wildcats another run. Villanova remained aggressive as Ryan Toohers (Florham Park, N.J.) battled with two-strikes and knocked a single into left field scoring O'Reilly. Lucas Latrenta (Greenwich, Conn.) sealed the rally with a double down the left field line and the Wildcats never looked back.

After a clean top of the sixth inning from Kingsbury, Villanova tacked on two more runs in the sixth by capitalizing on a Seawolves error and three walks. In the seventh, the Wildcats remained patient and manufactured two runs after three walks. Stony Brook would strike back for one in the top of the eighth, but the Wildcats bullpen would close the door for the victory.

Villanova saw offensive production from four Wildcats tallying multiple hits. Ryan Toohers led the charge with three hits while rookie Cameron Hassert came in clutch with three timely RBI's. Six of the eight Villanova runs came with two-out hitting. Despite seven walks from the pitching staff, the Villanova hurlers combined to strand nine Seawolves on the bases.

The Wildcats will return to action on Friday, April 9 when they travel to Creighton for a weekend series. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 ET.
