Wildcats and St. John's Play a 2-2 Tie

Villanova got goals from Smith and Stadler Sunday

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Goals by Reagan Smith and Makayla Stadler provided the scoring Sunday afternoon as Villanova and St. John's played a 2-2 draw in a BIG EAST match played on a sunny spring afternoon at the Higgins Soccer Complex.

Stadler made a bid for the game-winner in the 109th minute with the only shot of the second overtime period but the attempt was high.

The Wildcats (2-6-2 overall, 1-3-2 BIG EAST) registered the only score of the first 45 minutes at 21:12 off a sequence that began with a Nova corner kick. Emma Weaver got the assist as Smith picked up the goal, beating Red Storm goalkeeper Naya Lipkens

St. John's owned a 5-4 edge in first half shots.

The Red Storm drew even at 52:49 on a goal scored by Zsani Kajan.

A short while after St. John's (5-2-1 overall, 2-2-1 BIG EAST) was whistled offside, the Wildcats created an attacking opportunity that ultimately paid off when Stadler scored at 63:49 off a feed from Chloe O'Neill. That gave Nova a 2-1 lead.

Megan McClay made a save in the 66th minute off a shot by Ava Collins to help the Wildcats maintain the advantage. Villanova made nine saves on the day, including six from McClay and three by Maria Thomas in her 16:43 of action.

St. John's tied the game on a goal by Collins at 82:53.

There were only three shots in the two overtime periods, with the Wildcats producing two of them. But neither team was able to tally the golden goal.

Next up for the Wildcats is a Thursday afternoon visit to Connecticut that gets underway at 2 p.m.
