Trinity Hart Surges Into Eighth Place in School History in the Long Jump at Penn Challenge

Villanova tallied several new PRs and three first-place finishes at local meet on Saturday afternoon

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—Junior long jumper and sprinter Trinity Hart (Scotch Plains, N.J.) tallied a personal best mark in the long jump and moved into the top 10 in the Villanova record book during competition at the Penn Challenge on Saturday afternoon. The local meet saw the Wildcats produce three individual winners and several personal best marks at Franklin Field. Freshman high jumper Roschell Clayton (Montego Bay, Jamaica), senior sprinter Danielle Burns (Phoenix, Ariz.) and sophomore Jane Livingston (Lancaster, Pa.) were among the Villanova athletes who won their events.

Hart was the runner-up out of 15 competitors in the long jump with a mark of 5.63 meters. She recorded the mark on the last of her six attempts and moved up two spots in the standings from fourth place into a second place finish. Hart bested her previous lifetime best of 5.53 meters which had been recorded during her scholastic career at Scotch Plains-Fanwood High School and also eclipsed her previous collegiate best mark of 5.50 meters from the indoor Wesley A. Brown Invitational at Navy in January 2019. The mark of 5.63 meters on Saturday puts Hart eight overall on the Wildcats all-time performance list in the long jump and makes her seventh on the program's all-time outdoor list.

There were three other Villanova athletes in competition in the long jump, including sophomore Faith Robinson (St. Louis Park, Minn.) who came in sixth with a mark of 5.30 meters. Junior Jennifer Barbour (Middletown, Conn.) added a measurement of 5.11 meters and freshman Caroline Carlson (Miami, Fla.) produced a mark of 4.87 meters. Later in the day, Hart led the same group of athletes in the 100 meters with an eighth place finish and a time of 12.64. Robinson won her heat of the 100 meter and finished just behind Hart with a ninth place overall finish in 12.65, while Barbour recorded a personal best time of 12.87.

Clayton and Addie Renner of Penn tied for first in the high jump with a height of 1.70 meters. They each entered the competition with the bar at 1.65 meters and made it over on their first attempts of the day. Both athletes also had a successful clearance on their first jumps at 1.70 meters before they were eliminated on three tries with the bar at a height of 1.75 meters. Clayton had a successful collegiate debut indoors earlier this year and recorded a personal best mark of 1.80 meters in a home tournament earlier this month.

Villanova won both the 100 meter hurdles and the 400 meter hurdles on a successful day for the team's sprinters. Livingston raced across the finish line with a winning time of 14.23 in the 100 hurdles, followed by junior Jada Thomas (Kingston, Jamaica) in second place with a time of 14.63. Carlson registered a personal best time of 16.43 and eclipsed her previous top mark from high school by six-hundredths of a second. In the 400 meter hurdles, Burns posted a winning time of 1:02.39 in her first hurdles race of the year.

Some of the same runners competed for the Wildcats in the 200 meters, with Livingston winning her heat and finishing eighth out of 20 competitors with a time of 26.03. Thomas came in 10th in 26.10, while senior Sarah Jones (Sewell, N.J.) had a time of 27.22 and redshirt freshman Nikki Merrill (Portsmouth, R.I.) crossed the finish line in 28.30. Merrill also ran the 400 meters in 1:00.98, while freshman Kate Flynn (Gray, Tenn.) posted a time of 1:06.89 which was more than two seconds faster than she ran in the Villanova Opener last week.

Junior thrower Emily Galvin (Pitman, N.J.) came in second in the hammer with a mark of 45.98 meters which was recorded on her fourth throw of the day. Galvin is fresh off a personal best performance in the hammer last week when her distance of 51.78 meters put her into second place on the Wildcats all-time performance list in the event.
