Queens, N.Y.- Strong offense lifted Villanova over the St. John's Red Storm 23-8 on Saturday in a shootout at DaSilvia Memorial Field. With the win, the Wildcats improved 5-3 overall and 5-3 in BIG EAST play.
This is the second meeting of the season between the Wildcats and Red Storm where Villanova scored 20 or more goals. The first meeting on March 14
th Villanova won 20-8. This was the first time the Wildcats netted 20 goal since March of 2016.
Matt Campbell finished with a team high six goals on the day while
Keegan Khan and
Eric Overbay each had five points on a goal and four assisted.
Khan set up Campbell in the opening minute to give Villanova the quick lead. Just over a minute later Overbay dished it to
Tucker Goodelle to go up 2-0. St. John's got on the board next but Villanova answered back with three straight goals. Khan set up Daly to start it off,
Gavin Burke netted the next, a and Khan dished it to
Corey McManus for the third. The Red Storm netted one more and so did Campbell to make it 6-2 Villanova at the end of one.
St. John's scored the opening goal of the second quarter and Villanova then went on to net eight straight over 21 minutes of action. It started at 12:41 in the second quarter when McManus dished it to Burke and Villanova would score three more before halftime. Overbay dished it to Campbell for one then Daly and McManus netted unassisted goal to make it 10-3 at halftime.
The offense clicked right away at the start of the third, with Campbell scoring an EMO goal in the first 30 seconds.
Colin Crowley just seconds later scored his first of the game, followed by one by Khan and a goal by Campbell to make it 14-3. St. John's got one goal at 7:11 and the Wildcat would then go on to score the next second.
Goodelle score the first on a pass from Khan, Crowley would set up Daly and McManus back-to-back to make it 17-4 at the end of three. Campbell would score his final goal of the game at the beginning of the 4
th quarter on a pass from Overbay and it was quickly followed by a McManus goal on a dish from Crowley to make it 19-4 at the 13:28 mark.
Mason Reale set up
Stevie Peters for the sixth goal of the run and it was closed out by a goal by Overbay, who was set up by Campbell at 10:55.
The Red Storm scored next which was answered by Reale's first goal of the game for Villanova to make it 22-5. St. John's would score three goals before the end of the game and Peters would set up
Gavin Derham for the final goal of the game to make the final 23-8.
Brendan Haggerty got his first career start in goal and played all 60 minutes between the posts. The senior had seven saves on the day and also picked up his first career win.
Justin Coppola went 17-22 from the faceoff x and had eight ground balls.
Zachary Kryza finished with a pair of ground balls and caused turnovers, while
Chet Comizio had three ground balls.
Villanova will return home to host the Marquette Golden Eagles on Saturday, April 24
th. Faceoff is scheduled for 12:00 P.M.
