Villanova, Pa.- The Villanova Wildcats defeated the Marquette Golden Eagles 19-8 on Senior Day.
Villanova's offense got going early going up 5-2 at the end of the first quarter.Â
Eric Overbay started the game assisting Villanova's first three goals.Â
Matt Campbell scored the opener followed by a goal by
Corey McManus, who finished with six goals on the day, and the third goal for Villanova was scored by
Colin Crowley.Â
Keegan Khan would then set up Campbell to put Villanova up 4-1 with five minutes to go. Khan would finish with six assists, a career high. The Wildcats scored the final goal of the quarter with 44 seconds remaining following a failed clear by the Golden Eagles
Gavin Burke dished it to an open McManus to make it 5-2.Â
The Wildcats offense kept rolling in the seconds, netting 7 goals over the 15 minutes. The defense also kept strong limiting Marquette to two goals once again. Campbell scored this third of the day to open the quarter followed by a Marquette goal. It would be the junior Campbell again who would net another unassisted goal this time at 9:45 to put Villanova up 7-3. Khan dished it to McManus just 25 seconds latter to keep the offense going. The Golden Eagles would score their final goal of the quarter at 7:47 and Villanova would score four more before the half.Â
Khan had back-to-back assists, first setting up Crowley and then
Patrick Daly on a successful EMO to go up 10-4. Overbay scored an unassisted goal at 1:15 that was followed up seven seconds later by a goal by Daly on a pass from
Justin Coppola. Villanova was up 12-4 at the half.
After closing out the second quarter on a 4-0 run Villanova opened the third doing the same. Overbay started the scoring,
Austin Fraser assisted Campbell for the second goal, Khan dished it McManus for the third, and Khan would score the final of the 8-0 run to make it 16-4. Marquette netted two goals before the end of the quarter to make it 16-6.Â
Khan got his final assist of the game just 15 seconds into the final quarter on a goal by McManus. Marquette scored on a successful EMO but McManus would score his final of the day at 9:59 on a dish form Crowley to make it 18-7. The Golden Eagles got one more a few minutes later and
Mason Reale scored his second goal of the season to close out the game and make the final 19-8.
Will Vitton got the win in goal, the junior played just over 56 minutes and had five saves. Senior
Brendan Haggerty finished the final three plus minutes in goal and had two saves and did not allow a goal.Â
Owen Prybylski finished with four ground balls and three caused turnovers while
Zachary Kryza had two caused turnovers. Coppola went 14-22 from the faceoff x and had a team high five ground balls.
Villanova will host the Denver Pioneers on Wednesday at Villanova Stadium. First faceoff is scheduled for 12:00 P.M.
