Villanova, Pa.- The No. 16 Villanova Wildcats rallied in the fourth quarter to tie the game and force overtime against the No. 10 Denver Pioneers, but it would be Denver's Ethan Walker who would net the game winner just over a minute into overtime to make the final 11-10.
The game was close throughout, with both teams only leading by as much as two during the over 61 minutes. Jack Hannah scores to put Denver up 1-0 in the opening seconds. Villanova pulled ahead on back-to-back unassisted goals by
Matt Campbell and
Colin Crowley. Walker score his first to tie it at two and Sam Dwinell netted Denver's third to give them the led at 8:15. Villanova too the lead again in the first with two quick goals,
Austin Fraser netted the first and Crowley dished it to McManus for the second to put the team up 4-3. Lucas Cotler would tie the game at 4 with just under two go to in the first.
The second quarter only saw two goals, one by both teams. The Pioneers Hannah netted theirs at 10:55 and Campbell score Villanova's at 9:36 to make it 5-5 at the half.
After almost 15 minutes of action without a goal the Wildcats offense got going.
Keegan Khan score his first of the game and then assisted Campbell's third on a successful EMO to make it 7-5 Villanova. Denver's Walker would score one at 3:28 on an extra man opportunity to make it 7-6 at then end of the third.
The Pioneer's started the fourth quarter with two goals, Alex Simmons scores the first and Walker the second to give them a 8-7 lead. Khan bought Villanova back within one at 5:46 but Denver would pull away scoring two to have their largest lead of the game with just over two minutes to play.
It would be Campbell who would set up Villanova's two final goals of regulation. First the junior dished it inside to McManus to make it a one goal game with 1:05 to play. After a Villanova timeout Campbell this time passed it across to
Patrick Daly would was able to jump and got his shot to fall into the back of the net to tie it with 31 seconds in regulation.
Denver won the final faceoff of the fourth and both TD Ierlan and Hannah got shots off on goal that were saved by
Will Vitton and forced overtime.
In overtime the Pioneers won the faceoff and score just a minute and three seconds later when Lucas Cotler got a cross pass to Walker who dove and got the shot to go into the goal to make the final 11-10.
Vitton finished with 10 saves on the game along with a pair of ground balls and a caused turnover.
Zachary Kryza had a team high three caused turnovers while
Justin Coppola went 10-23 at faceoffs.
Villanova will close out the regular season on Saturday, May 1
st against the Lehigh Mountaineers. Faceoff is scheduled for 12:00 P.M.
