PHILADELPHIA, Pa.-Villanova was unable to contain Princeton's dominant attacking in a 3-0 loss. The Wildcats drop to 6-4 while the Tigers improve to 5-2.
Princeton jumped out to a commanding 8-0 lead to begin the match fueled by a combination of four kills and four attack errors by the Wildcats. Despite a 5-0 run by the Wildcats to cut the deficit to 16-8, Princeton held the lead for the entire first set for a 25-12 win.
The second set was a back-and-forth affair between both sides. A pair of kills from
Riley Homer gave the Wildcats an early 3-1 lead but the Tigers were quick to counter and went on a 4-1 run to lead 5-4. There were seven lead changes throughout the second set. The moment that Princeton began to edge away occurred in the final four serves. Tied at 21, the Tigers scored four consecutive points for a 25-21 win.
Down 2-0, the Wildcats battled hard against Princeton in the third set. There was never a lead by more than five points for both sides. Both teams traded blows and the Wildcats tied the Tigers six times but were unable to get over the hump and grab a lead. Leading 20-18, the Tigers went on a 3-0 run to give themselves enough breathing room for the eventual 25-20 third set win and the match.
Throughout the match, Princeton recorded a .314 hitting percentage, out-blocked Villanova 5-2 and had three players record double-digit kills.
