Box Score NORFOLK, VA. - The Villanova Wildcats had a tough run on the road as they fell to the Monarchs of Old Dominion University (ODU) in a 4-0 loss in the BIG EAST matchup.
The first quarter was quiet with very little action happening on both ends of the field. Both teams were working gaining some momentum and the Wildcats began to have a strong start with multiple shots on goal and strong possessions on the field.
As the second quarter began the Monarchs came out very aggressive and had back-to-back goals within the same minute right as the quarter kicked off. The Wildcats had numerous strong shots on goal, but the Old Dominion goalkeeper was a difficult barrier to get around. The Wildcats were able to draw more corners in the second quarter and despite being so close with their attempts on goal were unable to convert on these opportunities.
The Wildcats continued to fight and put what they could up against a strong ODU team but their attacks on goal just continued to come. The third quarter brought more of a challenge as the Monarchs continued to capitalize on penalty corners and scored a goal at the 36:41 mark and another at the 40:59 mark. Sophomore goalkeeper
Emma Leppert had two saves in the quarter and was working hard, despite the score, she has come up with some big saves.
After a strong third quarter from the Monarchs, the Wildcats regrouped and were able to hold off ODU from scoring again in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats had some solid opportunities to get on the board but were just not able to connect with the back of the net and get pass the keeper. A tough loss ending their three-game win streak to this tough ODU team.
Assistant coach
Carrera Lucas commented on the loss and what they can improve upon in the next game.
"We started this game strong and really gave ODU a challenge in the first half but lost our discipline and aggressive energy in the second half," said Lucas. "We felt that we were in position to really impress today but spent far too much of the game playing below our potential. A fast and aggressive start, however, is a promising takeaway from this game."
The Wildcats are back in action as they travel back to PA to face off against the Mountain Hawks of Lehigh University away on Monday Oct. 3. Game time is set for 6 p.m.
