VILLANOVA, Pa. – Villanova University women's volleyball took on Xavier at Jake Nevin Field House on Saturday evening, being defeated by the Musketeers in four sets (22-25, 25-23, 15-25, 21-25).
Freshman Tara Garvey notched a career-high 20 kills for Villanova (6-16, 2-8 BIG EAST), while Rose Crist added 12 terminations. Andrea Campos led all players with 38 assists, while Elizabeth Feczko tallied a match-high 15 digs.
Neither team could establish a large lead in the first set, as the score was tied as late as 17-17. After the squads mostly traded points, Xavier strung together a 4-1 run to secure a 21-18 lead and continued to a 25-22 victory in the frame.
Despite an early 5-3 Xavier lead in the second stanza, Villanova utilized a 9-0 run with Riley Homer at the service line to jump out to an 11-5 advantage. While the Musketeers closed the gap to as tight as two points, the 'Cats weathered the storm and moved on to tie the match at one set apiece.
Set three was dominated by Xavier, as the visitors led wire-to-wire and cruised to a 25-15 win.
The fourth set was tightly contested, as 13 ties and five lead changes were featured in the period. After Villanova tied it at 18-18, XU finished the frame on a 7-3 run to pick a victory in the match.
