Villanova, Pa.- Villanova men's lacrosse head coach
Mike Corrado announced this week the hiring of
John "Woody" Derham as a volunteer assistant coach. Derham, who graduated from Villanova in 1988, was a member of the men's lacrosse staff in various roles from 2002-17.
"I am very excited to have Woody back as a member of the coaching staff," shared Corrado. "He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience as well as a familiarity with our program"
In his role Derham will coach the faceoff specialist and manage substitution activities in the box which he did from 2015-17 when he was in the same role. In 2002 Derham was an assistant coach along with Corrado on then head coach Randy Marks staff. In his first role Derham was responsible for coaching the faceoff specialist and assisted in running the defense which he did for nine seasons. From 2011-14 Derham served as the program's director of operations.
Derham was instrumental in helping develop Wildcat Chris Colliniates into a dominant force on faceoffs. Colliniates has won 219 of 430 career faceoffs and ranks third all-time at Villanova with a career percentage of .554. In 2003, Derham guided Matt Lucas to the second-best faceoff percentage in the country.
He graduated from Villanova's College of Commerce and Finance in 1988 after playing four years under Coach Marks. He was a teammate of Corrado from 1985-87 and was the team captain and recipient of the prestigious Jim Jones Award in 1988.
Derham has three children, Max, Margo, and Gavin. Max graduated from Villanova in 2018 and Gavin is in his senior year, both have played on the men's lacrosse team. Margo graduated from Saint Joseph's in 2020.
