QUEENS, N.Y. – The Villanova volleyball team played its penultimate match of the season on Friday night, falling to the St. John's Red Storm in straight sets (25-18, 25-19, 25-18) at Carnesecca Arena.
Tara Garvey put up nine kills for Villanova (9-20, 5-12 BIG EAST), while Izzy Plummer tied a career high with six kills on a .500 hitting percentage and added a team-high three blocks. Riley Homer and Rose Crist each tallied five terminations in the matchup, and Elizabeth Feczko led the Wildcats with 12 digs.
St. John's took an early 6-2 lead to prompt a timeout from VU head coach Josh Steinbach, but three straight kills from Garvey got the 'Cats back within one. The Johnnies established some distance from VU, getting an advantage of six and maintaining that edge for a set one victory.
After the two sides were tied at 7-7 in the second frame, the Red Storm used a 9-3 run to take a six-point lead. Villanova brought the deficit back to three, but SJ kept up the momentum and picked up a two-set advantage.
The Johnnies took the first four points of the third period and led the entirety of the frame, moving to its largest lead of seven and sweeping the match in dominant fashion.
