New Haven, CT. – The No. 20 Villanova Wildcats scored six goals in the final quarter and limited the No. 7 Yale Bulldogs to only one goal but fell by a final of 17-14. The Wildcats move to 1-1 overall and the Bulldogs start their season 1-0.
Villanova and Yale each dominated a pair of quarters. The Bulldogs started off the game strong outscoring the Wildcats 6-2. Villanova's
Patrick Daly started off where he left off last week scoring the opening goal on a dish from
Austin Fraser. Leo Johnson, who finished with a hat-trick for Yale, scored two of his goals during the Bulldogs five goal run during the opening quarter.
Matt Campbell ended the run with a goal on a pass from
Luke Keating with just under two to go. Yale netted their final of the quarter with seconds to go to make it 6-2.
The second quarter was all Villanova with the Wildcats netting six goals and limiting the Bulldogs to just one. Graduate student
Brett Baskin completed a hat trick in the quarter. Baskin scored the opening goal on an EMO opportunity, and it was followed by Daly also netting a goal during another man-up opportunity. Baskin netted his second at 8:16 and less then a minute later
Matt Campbell tied the game up at six. Yale's only goal came at 5:18 mark, Baskin answered to tie it again and Fraser scored his only goal of the game to give Villanova 8-7 lead at halftime.
Yale dominated in the third quarter netting nine goals while the Wildcats only netted one at 8:57 when Fraser again set up Daly. A trio of Bulldogs scored their first of the season to begin the quarter to go up 10-8. Daly brought it within one, but Yale scored six to close out the quarter. Johnson completed his hat-trick to start followed by a pair of goals from Brad Sharp and Matt Brandau while Will Cabrera scored one. Brandau finished with a game high five goals and one assist for six points. The Bulldogs led 16-9 at the end of the quarter.
Villanova fought in the final quarter to comeback with Campbell and Keating scoring in the first two minutes to bring Villanova within five. Yale scored their final goal of the game at 12:47 and Villanova closed out netting three. Keating started it off, Daly followed by scoring his fourth of the game at 9:57 and transfer
J.P. Basile would net the final goal at 3:11 to make the final 17-14.
Chet Comizio finished with three caused turnovers while
Justin Coppola was 16-for-31 from the faceoff x with 10 ground balls.
Will Vitton had seven saves in 45 minutes and
Brendan Haggerty played the final 15 minutes and had one save. Villanova's close defense finished with eight total ground balls and four caused turnovers.
Villanova will host Fairfield for their home opener next Saturday. First faceoff inside Villanova Stadium is set for 1:00 P.M. and can be seen on Nova Nation All-Access on FloSports.
