Villanova Falls to Penn on Last Second Goal

Villanova, Pa.- The Villanova Wildcats fell to the Penn Quakers on Sunday afternoon by a final of 8-7 inside Villanova Stadium.  Penn netted the game winning goal with half a second left on the clock to take home the inaugural Farrell Cup.

Villanova and Penn played back and forth throughout the game.  The Quakers went up 2-0 to start but Villanova tied it up midway through the first.  Patrick Daly and Matt Campbell netted the goals for the Wildcats.  Penn's Sam Handley scored his second goal of the game at the end of the first quarter to make it 3-2.

The Quakers went back up two with a goal by Jack Schultz to open the second quarter.  It would be Daly and Campbell again who would score back-to-back goals to tie it up at four.  In the final two minutes of the quarter Penn was able to score to put themselves up 6-4 at halftime.

Villanova's offense and defense came out strong in the second half, not allowing Penn to score a goal in the third while tying it up again.  Daly completed a hattrick at the 13:55 mark and Campbell would do the same at the 6:14 mark to tie the game at 6.

Neither team scored a goal for nearly 15 minutes, but it would be J.P. Basile who found the back of the net on a pass from Campbell to give Villanova the lead with 6:54 to play.  The Quakers scored two goals to close out the fourth.  The first was at the 1:18 mark to tie it at 7 and the game winner was scored by Dylan Gergar with just half a second to go to make the final 8-7.

Justin Coppola was 13-for-18 from the faceoff x with seven ground balls.  Chet Comizio and Brody LaPorte each caused three turnovers while Comizio had six ground balls and LaPorte five.  Will Vitton finished with six saves.
