McKenna Keegan Named First Team All-American in 800 Meters

Villanova middle distance runner is 29th woman in school history to be at least a six-time All-American

NEW ORLEANS—Graduate middle distance runner McKenna Keegan (West Grove, Pa.) earned the sixth All-America honor of her career when the list of All-Americans for the indoor track & field season was announced by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCA) on Monday afternoon. Keegan is a first team All-American in the 800 meters for the second straight indoor season after she tallied a third place finish at the NCAA Championships over the weekend.

The third place finish for Keegan in the final of the 800 meters last Saturday night in Birmingham, Ala. is the highest she has finished in any event at the NCAA Championships during her collegiate career. Keegan raced to a third place result while notching the second-fastest indoor 800 meters in school history in 2:02.70. She ran three of the eight fastest indoor 800 meter races in the Villanova record book this season alone, while Keegan and former teammate Siofra Cleirigh Buttner have now combined for the 11 fastest indoor times by any Wildcats in the 800 meters.

Keegan is the 29th woman in school history to earn at least six career All-America honors. Four of her career accolades have come during the indoor season, including a pair of top-four finishes in the 800 meters over the last two years and previously being part of two distance medley relay teams that earned All-America accolades during the 2017 and 2019 seasons. Keegan has also been an All-American outdoors twice in the 800 meters.

During the 2022 indoor campaign, Keegan won the 800 meters at the Husky Invitational in February when she posted a then indoor personal best of 2:03.48. She went on to win the BIG EAST title in the 800 meters for the third time in her career (twice indoors, once outdoors). Keegan also ran the 400 meter leg of Villanova's conference champion distance medley relay, and anchored the 4x800 meter relay squad to a third place finish and All-BIG EAST honors.

Villanova has scored at the NCAA Championships in 35 of the 39 years that the indoor women's meet has been held, including each of the last 13 seasons. Only five Division I women's programs have scored in at least 35 indoor NCAA meets. With last week's third place finish by Keegan the Wildcats have now earned 40 All-America honors all-time in the 800 meters, with an even split of 20 accolades for both the indoor and outdoor seasons.
