The Wildcats are 3-1 all-time in BIG EAST title games. The last time Villanova played Connecticut in the BIG EAST championship game was on March 11, 2003, when the Wildcats upset the number one nationally ranked Huskies by a score of 52-48. The win snapped Connecticut's then NCAA record 70-game win streak.
Â
Monday's game will be the second meeting of the season between Villanova and Connecticut. In the first match-up on Feb. 9, the Wildcats tallied a 72-69 win at No. 8 Connecticut in a game played at the XL Center. The win snapped Connecticut's NCAA record of 145 straight conference games with a win (169 when counting conference tournament games). It was also Villanova's first win at UConn since a 50-44 victory on Jan. 27, 1993, and it was the first win over the Huskies since Feb. 28, 2004 (59-56). Villanova had four players in double figures in the game, including Garzon (19), Siegrist (17), Herlihy (15) and Olsen (11).
Â
While Siegrist continues to be the star of the show for Villanova, Herlihy has been outstanding in the two BIG EAST Tournament games. In the two contests versus St. John's and Seton Hall, Herlihy has tallied 33 points and 25 rebounds and she is 12-of-24 from the field and 5-of-10 from three-point range. Her best effort came against St. John's in the quarterfinals when she had 16 points and 17 rebounds.
Â
Olsen came into the BIG EAST Tournament shooting .288 from three-point range (19-of-66). In the first two games of the conference tournament, she is 5-of-11 from long distance for 45.4 percent, including connecting on a career-high four three-point field goals in Saturday's quarterfinal round win over St. John's.
Â
After starting the season 3-5, Villanova has won 15 of the last 16 and 20 of its last 22 to improve to 23-7 on the year. A big reason for the Wildcats 3-5 start was due to the absence of Siegrist who missed six games with an injury. In those six contests, Villanova registered a 3-3 mark. The Wildcats are 20-4 with Siegrist in the line-up.
