Fourth-Quarter Fireworks over VMI Lead Wildcats to Senior Day Victory

Villanova netted eight goals in the final frame to tie a bow on the regular season

VILLANOVA, Pa. – On a day where Villanova honored seniors Isabel Herbst, Amanda Rice and Kaysie Stuba, it did so in dominating fashion, using an eight-goal fourth quarter to run away with a 16-9 victory over VMI to wrap up the regular season on Saturday at the Villanova Swim Complex.

Villanova's (20-15, 9-7 MAAC) win was led by a strong effort from the seniors as the trio combined for 10 of the team's 16 goals scored. Stuba found the back of the net five times with a pair of assists for a seven-point day and had a team-best two steals. Herbst tacked on a hat trick for three points while Rice netted a pair for her two points. As a whole, the Wildcats stole the ball nine times from VMI (4-26, 1-15 MAAC) and held the Keydets scoreless in the second period.

Abigail Shelby and Sarah Shaw split time in net. Shelby allowed five goals with three saves and an assist while Shaw grabbed 11 saves with four goals permitted.

Herbst opened senior day with a goal nearly a minute in before Makenna Moore netted a penalty shot and an even strength goal to give VMI a 2-1 lead. Stuba retaliated to tie it at two but Genevieve Petrassi answered, giving the Keydets the last lead they would see on the day. Stuba closed the period with a penalty goal to make it a 3-3 game.

Stuba's hat trick was cemented a minute into the second period on yet another five-meter attempt. Stella Byles made it a 3-0 Villanova run with 4:42 remaining in the half, scoring on a penalty chance of her own. A penalty was whistled on Petrassi with 2:10 left on the clock, sending Emily Morrissey up for the penalty shot. Her attempt went off the post, sending the game into the break at 5-3, Villanova.

VMI struck first in the second half with Maddie Berry getting the Keydets back within one, but her chance was met by another 3-0 Wildcat sprint. Joia McKinney opened the surge with an even strength goal at the 5:08 mark. A penalty on VMI's Kiara Anguiano gave Villanova its fifth five-meter attempt, this time with the ball in Rice's hands. She connected on the chance, making it a 7-4 lead. Not long after, Stuba extended the lead to four. Sydney Shettleroe ended the streak with a goal at the 1:08 mark, cutting the Villanova lead to 8-5 heading into the final frame.

The fourth opened with a fury for the Wildcats, rattling of a 7-1 run to put the game out of reach. Herbst opened the onslaught with back-to-back goals three minutes in to double up the Keydets, 10-5. Anguiano scored a goal with almost five minutes remaining before Villanova poured on a minute of scoring from Stuba, Emily McKenzie and Morrissey. Another penalty was called on Petrassi, sending Morrissey to the line for another penalty attempt. She was successful this time, continuing the Villanova scoring burst until Rice netted another at the 2:31 mark to make it, 15-6. Moore and Shettleroe scored back-to-back goals late to get within seven but McKenzie added another for good measure in front of the net with 10 seconds left. Moore scored one last goal for the Keydets with two seconds remaining.

Villanova locked up the second-most wins in program history with the victory at 20. The win over VMI put the bow on what has been an incredible regular season for a Wildcats' squad that took over numerous categories in the team record books. They scored a program-best 415 goals on well-over 1,000 shots, a shooting threshold that has only been seen one other time in team history when the 2013 squad attempted 1,004 shots.

Head coach Larry Sanders's group won a program-best 112 sprints and had a record 97 field blocks. The team bested previous leads in those categories by large numbers with the 2012 team swatting 37 field blocks and the 2013 crew winning 77.5 sprints.
