NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Villanova Wildcats completed their nonconference slate on Saturday, capping off the preseason with a four set win (27-29, 25-23, 25-14, 25-21) over Fordham.
"It's good to get off the bad streak," head coach Josh Steinbach said. "We're excited to get into BIG EAST play. We're 0-0 in the BIG EAST and that's the focus. We still have a lot of space to improve, so I'm optimistic for this team."
Kiera Booth totaled seven blocks and a season-high 17 kills on a .593 hitting percentage for Villanova (4-8), earning All-Tournament honors for her performance on the weekend.
Riley Homer contributed her fifth double-double of the year with 11 kills and a match-high 21 digs, while freshman Tara Garvey tallied a career-high eight kills. Andrea Campos and Ellery Gray combined for 43 assists in the match and Taryn Whittingham notched four service aces on the night.
Neither team could establish momentum in the opening period until VU used a 7-0 run to pick up an 18-15 lead. But Fordham staved off multiple set points and captured the long frame, 29-27.
Villanova got out to a hot start in the second stanza and led 6-2, but Fordham pulled right back to tie the score. The 'Cats secured a 17-12 advantage, but it wasn't enough as the Rams tied the match at 17-17. VU outlasted their opponents for the rest of the period, picking up a 25-23 victory.
The third set was all Wildcats from the beginning, going up 5-0 before a Fordham timeout. VU continued to lead 13-2 and 16-3, and went on to take the stanza 25-14.
Both sides traded points in the fourth frame before FU took a 10-6 advantage. Villanova battled right back into the competition, tying the score at 12-12. The 'Cats were finally able to establish a lead and moved on to a four-set victory to snap a six-match losing streak.
