VILLANOVA, Pa. — Rose Crist tallied a match-high 17 kills on Friday night as the Villanova Wildcats picked up their second win of the year in a three-set sweep (25-23, 26-24, 29-27) of Lafayette.
"It feels really good to get the win at home," head coach Josh Steinbach said. "Rose did some heavy lifting for us, she was great today. We're happy to win but have some things to clean up."
Riley Homer added 11 kills and a team-high 13 digs for the Wildcats (2-2) in their opening contest of the Villanova Classic, while Madeline Barber totaled seven kills with a .375 hitting percentage.
Belle Morgan contributed 21 assists in the match for VU and Kiera Booth led all players with three blocks.
Neither team could gain its footing early, as five ties came in a close first frame. Lafayette went up 23-21, but four straight points gave VU the opening set 25-23. The 'Cats hit .353 in the first stanza, with six kills from Crist highlighting a 16-kill set from the team.
Villanova hopped out to an early advantage in the second, owning a 10-5 lead and prompting a Leopards timeout. But Lafayette battled right back into it, staving off set point and tying the score at 24-24. Crist then added her twelfth kill of the match and Morgan delivered a service ace, propelling the Wildcats into a 2-0 lead in the match.
The third frame went back-and-forth, as 20 ties and 11 lead changes came in the stanza. The Leopards appeared on the verge of forcing a fourth set, but three straight Villanova points gave the 'Cats the match on a 29-27 victory.
VU's coaches took part in the Black Out Racism campaign during the night, wearing black as part of the "Stand with Rachel Richardson" movement across college volleyball.
